More than just company

Loneliness among older people is one of the UK's most pressing health challenges. Age UK estimates that over 2 million people aged 75 and over live alone, and more than a million say they go for over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour, or family member.

The health impacts of loneliness are severe — comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, according to research. It increases the risk of dementia by 64%, depression by 40%, and heart disease by 29%.

Our companionship care service provides a live-in companion who becomes a genuine part of your loved one's daily life. They share meals, go on walks, play cards, visit friends, watch favourite programmes, and simply provide the warmth of human connection that everyone needs.

But it's more than just company. A live-in companion also provides practical peace of mind — someone to notice if something isn't right, help with household tasks, accompany to appointments, and be there in case of emergencies.

What companionship care includes

  • Conversation and company: Genuine, meaningful interaction throughout the day — discussing the news, reminiscing, sharing stories.
  • Shared meals: Cooking together or preparing meals to enjoy at the table, not alone in front of the television.
  • Activities and hobbies: Gardening, puzzles, crafts, reading, music, or whatever your loved one enjoys.
  • Outings and socialising: Trips to the shops, cafés, garden centres, community groups, places of worship, or visiting friends and family.
  • Light household support: Help with cleaning, laundry, shopping, and keeping the home comfortable.
  • Safety and peace of mind: Someone present to notice changes in health or mood, prevent accidents, and respond to emergencies.
  • Appointment accompaniment: Going to GP appointments, hospital visits, hairdressers, or social events.
  • Pet care assistance: Help with walking dogs, feeding pets, and getting to the vet.

Who benefits from companionship care?

Companionship care is ideal for older people who:

  • Live alone and feel isolated or lonely
  • Are mostly independent but would like some help around the home
  • Have lost a spouse or partner and are adjusting to living alone
  • Are becoming less confident going out alone
  • Want someone at home for safety and reassurance
  • Family members live far away and worry about them

Companionship care can also be a gentle introduction to live-in care. Many clients start with companionship and, as their needs naturally increase over time, their carer adapts to provide more support — meaning they never have to face the disruption of moving to a care home.

Cost of companionship care

Companionship care falls under our Standard plan, starting from £1,300 per week. This includes accommodation for the carer, all meals, and their continuous presence in the home.

While this represents a significant investment, many families find it provides extraordinary value when compared to the alternatives — or when measured against the health costs of prolonged loneliness and isolation.
