Understanding Motor Neurone Disease (MND)
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive condition that affects the motor neurones in the brain and spinal cord, gradually reducing the ability to move, speak, swallow, and eventually breathe. It's a devastating diagnosis, but with the right support, quality of life can be maintained for as long as possible.
Live-in care for MND is particularly important because needs can change rapidly and unpredictably. Having a dedicated carer who knows your loved one means that support can be adjusted immediately, without waiting for care agency schedules or care home staffing changes.
Our MND carers work closely with specialist MND teams, speech and language therapists, respiratory teams, and palliative care services to ensure joined-up, comprehensive care.
How our carers help with Motor Neurone Disease (MND)
Respiratory Support
Monitoring breathing, supporting non-invasive ventilation (NIV), and knowing when to seek urgent medical help. Our carers are trained in respiratory care.
Communication Support
As speech becomes difficult, our carers learn alternative communication methods — from letter boards to eye-gaze technology — maintaining your loved one's voice.
Mobility & Positioning
Safe transfers, wheelchair support, and regular repositioning to prevent pressure sores and maintain comfort as mobility decreases.
Nutrition & Swallowing
Support with eating and drinking as swallowing becomes difficult, including modified diets, thickened fluids, and PEG feeding if needed.
Equipment Management
Help with specialist equipment — hoists, wheelchairs, communication aids, ventilators — ensuring everything works properly and is used safely.
Family & Emotional Support
MND affects the whole family. Our carers support everyone — providing respite for family carers and emotional support through an incredibly difficult journey.
