What is live-in care?
Live-in care is a type of home care where a trained, professional carer moves into your home to provide around-the-clock support and companionship. The carer lives in a spare room and is available throughout the day and night to assist with whatever is needed — from personal care and medication to cooking, cleaning, and simply being there for a chat.
Unlike visiting care (also called domiciliary care), where carers pop in for short visits of 15–60 minutes a few times a day, a live-in carer is always present. This means there's always someone on hand if your loved one needs help getting up in the night, has a fall, or simply wants company.
Live-in care is the closest thing to having a member of the family available at all times — but with the professional training and experience needed to provide safe, effective care.
How does live-in care work day-to-day?
A typical day with a live-in carer might look something like this:
- Morning: The carer helps your loved one get up, wash, dress, and take their morning medication. They prepare a nutritious breakfast and help plan the day ahead.
- Mid-morning: Perhaps a walk to the local shops, a visit from a friend, or time in the garden. The carer might do some light housework or laundry while your loved one reads or watches television.
- Lunchtime: A freshly prepared meal tailored to dietary needs and preferences, eaten together at the table.
- Afternoon: Activities based on your loved one's interests — puzzles, cards, crafts, baking, or an outing to a café or garden centre. Perhaps a GP appointment or a visit from a district nurse.
- Evening: Dinner preparation, medication reminders, help getting ready for bed, and settling in for the night.
- Night-time: The carer sleeps in the home and is available if needed — for bathroom trips, repositioning, or reassurance.
Every care plan is entirely personalised. The routine adapts to your loved one's preferences, not the other way around. If they like a lie-in on Sundays, that's fine. If they want fish and chips on Friday, the carer will make it happen.
How much does live-in care cost?
The cost of live-in care depends on your needs, the level of support required, and your location. Here are the average weekly costs across the UK:

You may not have to pay the full cost yourself. Depending on your savings, assets, and income, your local council may contribute to some or all of the fees.
People with complex health needs may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare, which can fund all care costs. Attendance Allowance (up to £114.60/week in 2026/27) is also available for people over State Pension age.
The benefits of live-in care
- Stay at home: Your loved one remains in the place they know best, with their own belongings, their garden, their neighbours, and their pets.
- One-to-one attention: Unlike care homes where staff are shared between many residents, a live-in carer's focus is entirely on one person (or couple).
- Continuity of care: The same carer, day after day. This builds a real relationship and means the carer truly understands your loved one's needs, preferences, and personality.
- Flexibility: Care adapts to the person, not the institution. No set mealtimes, no lights-out, no restrictions on visitors.
- Better outcomes: Research consistently shows that people receiving care at home have better health outcomes, greater happiness, and maintain independence for longer.
- Family peace of mind: Knowing that someone trained and trustworthy is always there, 24 hours a day, is an enormous comfort to families.
- Cost-effective for couples: One carer can support both partners, making it significantly cheaper than two care home places.
What to provide for your live-in carer
The main practical requirement is a spare room. Beyond that, providing a welcoming environment ensures your carer can rest properly and deliver the best possible care.
The room doesn't need to be large or fancy — just a private space where the carer can sleep and have downtime during breaks. Our care managers can advise on any adaptations that might be helpful.
